The Cantillon and Houck families of Cleveland began vacationing at Put-in-Bay in the days when the Steamers tied up at Fox's Dock, now home of the Jet Express. When Dan Cantillon A view of the dining area and living room from the kitchen of Poor man's Nantucket at Put in Bay.married Genevieve Houck they, too, continued to vacation at Put-in-Bay with their growing family of nine children. In the 1950's Dan wrote a poem titled "South Bass" and forwarded it to his long-time friend and summer cottager, George McMonagle.
In that poem, Dan compared Put-in-Bay to the famous and more up-scale island in New England-Nantucket. He called the Put-in-Bay of the fifties, "Poor Man's Nantucket," and when Dan's son, Bill, bought their house on Put-in-Bay, he named it "Cantillon's Poor Man's Nantucket".
This generation of Cantillons enjoys the opportunity to offer a summer retreat to other families who love the island as much as they do.
